NCFO Relaunches Official Website
Last week the North Carolina Film Office announced their new, revamped website is up and running. The new site presents a new, sleeker, modern design while still continuing to be easy to navigate. The site adds a new color, electric blue, to the NCFO color palate as well as icons to some of the most requested information by site users. In addition, just like the NCFO’s logo, the site plays off of North Carolina’s “nc” abbreviation. To find out more about the new website and its features, click here or take a look at the new site, starting at the home page, by clicking here (and feel free to drop a line and let us know what you think by emailing info@ncfilm.com.
NC In The Hunt For Emmy Gold
When the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced their nominations for the 2011 Emmy Awards, seven (7) noms had ties to North Carolina. Raleigh natives Michael C. Hall (Dexter) and Evan Rachel Wood (Mildred Pierce) received nominations for Outstanding Actor-Drama Series and Outstanding Supporting Actress-Miniseries/TV Movie respectively while Wilkesboro’s Zach Galifianakis was nominated for his hosting role on Saturday Night Live (Outstanding Guest Actor-Comedy). Three UNCSA alums were also nominated for their work in sound editing, lighting and hairstyling while the American Idol segment that featured Scotty McCreery returning to Garner received a nod in the Outstanding Short-Form Picture Editing Category. Find out more about the nominations here.
Piedmont Triad Looks to Its Own for Promotion
Filmmakers in the Piedmont Triad have a chance to help their own cause in a promotion being held by the Piedmont Triad Film Commission. Filmmakers can submit a 30-second promo (due today) that helps showcase the region. The production team with the best promo will then be given a $5,000 contract to create a 3-minute video that will be used in marketing efforts by the PTFC in attracting other filmmakers and production companies to shoot in the region. Durham-filmed Feature Coming to VOD, Theatres
Main Street, which filmed in 2009 in Durham and stars Orlando Bloom (Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean) and Academy-award winner Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, Bridget Jones’s Diary), is coming to Video On Demand on Aug. 5 and will hit theatres the following month. This is a new way to release a feature, as films typically go to theatre then VOD. In the movie, a fictitious version of Durham is saved by an outsider who brings business back to the sleepy city—only his operations may not be as honorable as they seem. The feature had a direct-spend in the state of over $6.5 million and created 75 job opportunities. UNCSA Named One of World’s Top Film Schools
"The Hollywood Reporter" has released its inaugural list of top film schools from around the world and it’s no surprise to see that the University of North Carolina School of the Arts made the list, coming in ranked 12th. The magazine called UNCSA’s School of Filmmaking “a plunge into film in collaboration with drama, music, dance, design and production studies and a 65-piece orchestra.” To see the entire list, click here.
Wilmington Made-for-TV Movie Premieres in August
Teen Spirit, the 2-hour ABC Family original movie that shot in Wilmington earlier this year, is set to debut Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. as part of the network’s “Campus Crush” programming event. The feature, which stars members of the network’s top shows, is the tale of a popular high school girl who must has to turn a shy, unassuming wallflower into Prom Queen material. The production filmed for 20 days in the Port City, creating over 1,000 job opportunities for both crew and talent while having an estimated direct spend in excess of $4.5 million. Four Film Orgs Receive NC Arts Funding
The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in Durham, Charlotte’s Light Factory, Wilmington’s Cucalorus Film Festival and the RiverRun International Film Festival all received funds for the 2011-12 fiscal year from the NC Arts Council. While overall the amount given by the Arts Council was 15% less than last year, the funds given are still expected to leverage over $100 million in matching funds from private and local sources. Read more about the film related recipients here and click here to see a complete list of Arts Council grant recipients.
UNCSA Dean Happy About Feeling Blue
Produced by UNCSA School of Filmmaking dean Jordan Kerner, The Smurfs, hits theatres this weekend. Through internships on the production, Kerner was able to give UNCSA students hands on experience working a major motion picture. Kerner remaining active in the industry while also serving as dean is a big feather in the cap for UNCSA. Read more about Kerner and the students’ smurfy experience here.
