Homeland Receives Golden Globe Nominations
Dec 15, 2011
LOS ANGELES—The honors keep rolling in for Showtime’s freshman series, Homeland. The series, which films in the Charlotte Region of North Carolina, has received three Golden Globe nominations as announced by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) including a nomination for “Best Television Series-Drama.”
Homeland centers on the fictitious character Marine Sergeant Nicholas Brody, who returns home eight years after going missing in Iraq, and Carrie Mathison, a driven CIA officer who suspects Brody might be plotting an attack on America. The series has been a hit for Showtime with the premiere being Showtime’s most watched in over eight years and subsequent episodes maintaining a viewership of at least one million. The show has created 150 crew positions and over 3,500 talent opportunities while having a direct spend of over $30 million in the state.
Joining Homeland in the category of “Best Television Series-Drama” are fellow freshmen series American Horror Story, Boss, Game of Thrones and the lone returning nominee from last year—and last year’s winner—Boardwalk Empire.
Leading lady Claire Danes was nominated for “Best Performance by an Actress in Television Series-Drama” for her depiction of Mathison. Danes is a two-time Golden Globe winner, winning in the same category in 1995 for her performance in My So-Called Life and most recently won the Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television honor last year for her performance in Temple Grandin.
Like Danes, leading man Damian Lewis also received a nomination for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series-Drama” for his work as Sergeant Brody. This is Lewis’ second Golden Globe nomination as he was also nominated in 2002 for his work in the television mini-series Band of Brothers.
The Golden Globe nominations come on the heels of the Homeland also being named one of the Top 10 series of 2011 by the American Film Institute as well as receiving three nominations for Writers Guild of America honors (Best Drama, New Series, and Episodic Drama for the show’s “The Good Solider” episode).
In addition to the three nominations for the North Carolina-filmed series, Raleigh’s Evan Rachel Wood received her second Golden Globe Nomination, this time for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television” for her portrayal of Veda Peirce in the Mini Series Mildred Pierce –the same role that earned her an Emmy nomination last year. Mildred Pierce was also nominated for “Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture for Television.” Wood’s first Golden Globe nomination came in 2004 for her performance in the motion picture THIRTEEN.
The 69th annual Golden Globes will be awarded live on NBC on Sunday, January 15.
